How Central Jersey Fell in Love with Halloween
There’s something about October in Central Jersey.
The first cool nights arrive. Farm stands fill with pumpkins and mums. Cornfields turn golden. Porches begin glowing with jack-o’-lanterns. And seemingly overnight, ordinary fields, barns, back roads and neighborhoods transform into places built for Halloween.
But our obsession with Halloween didn’t happen overnight.
For generations, farming has been part of New Jersey’s identity. As farming became more challenging and the traditional growing season came to an end each fall, farmers began finding new ways to bring people onto their land — and keep the farm season going a little longer.
Pumpkin picking and hayrides became fall outings. Farm stands became destinations. Cornfields became mazes.
And eventually, when the sun went down, some of those hayrides and cornfields became something else entirely.
They became haunted.
Across New Jersey, agritourism grew into an important source of revenue for farms, helping farmers diversify their businesses while giving families something they were hungry for: an experience.
Here in Central Jersey, we watched that evolution happen in our own backyard.
Farms that generations knew for produce, pumpkins and hayrides began transforming after dark. Haunted hayrides rolled into the fields. Actors disappeared into the corn. Barns became haunted attractions. What began as another way to extend the fall season grew into traditions that people returned to year after year.
And Halloween kept growing beyond the farms.
Our towns embraced it. Houses became attractions of their own. Families planned their annual decorating displays months in advance. Parades and community celebrations became traditions passed from one generation to the next. And some local Halloween attractions became destinations drawing visitors from well beyond their hometowns.
Today, Halloween in Central Jersey isn't just October 31.
